Pilates is an exercise method using a movement repertoire based on principles such as breathing, axial extension, core stability, shoulder and hip mobility, and overall movement integration. These exercises are performed on either a mat or specialized Pilates equipment such as the Reformer, Cadillac, Stability Chair, and Ladder Barrel. A complete Pilates session addresses the whole body and moves the spine and muscles through their full range of motion, resulting in increased strength, flexibility, and improved posture, balance.

At H&D Pivotal Physical Therapy, our wellness and rehabilitative Pilates programs are highly individualized to meet your needs and goals. Our contemporary approach to Pilates allows our programs to range from purely rehabilitative to full body strengthening.

Pilates and Physical Therapy

Joseph Pilates originally created his method for many reasons but one use was to rehabilitate seriously injured war veterans. Today the Pilates method is often viewed as an exercise system, but its’ roots were in the world of rehabilitation. Pilates exercises are ideal for treating a wide variety of physical therapy diagnoses including back and neck pain, ankle sprains, knee, hip and shoulder injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, balance deficits, stenosis, tendonitis, and chronic pain.

At H&D Pivotal Physical Therapy, after a thorough evaluation, the progressive exercise program created for you will depend on your diagnosis and the outcome of a physical therapy evaluation. Your exercises will be continually re-assessed and modified as you progress. Our Pilates program can also be extended as part of your regular fitness program, even after completing rehabilitation.

Pilates and Wellness

Once you have completed your rehabilitation, our Pilates program can be extended as part of your regular fitness program.  While some patients use Pilates to bridge a return to their fitness routine of choice (I.e. jogging, golf, swimming, etc.), others will continue to include it as part of their regular exercise program.

We offer one-on-one Pilates by trained physical therapists for those who are looking to incorporate the method into their fitness routine.
