The SEAS Method

Although Schroth is more widely known, the Scientific Exercise Approach to Scoliosis (SEAS) is another method that similarly utilizes breathing and active self-correction to improve a patient’s posture. SEAS is a conservative, non-invasive, non-surgical approach that will retrain the body’s musculature to help your alignment achieve a more neutral stance. The therapist focusses on active self-correction techniques, performed without external assistance, generating increased spinal stability through an individualized exercise program with an emphasis on daily function.

Treating Scoliosis Using SEAS

At Pivotal Physical Therapy, we use the SEAS (Scientific Exercise Approach to Scoliosis) method to treat Scoliosis.  SEAS, originally founded in Italy, is a non-surgical patient-centric exercise approach to treating scoliosis.  SEAS uses active self-correction and functional exercises to improve the stability of the spine.  Active self-correction is learned through manual and verbal cues, positioning and the breath to achieve axial elongation and spinal alignment.   It also trains the neurological system, so a patient automatically corrects their spinal alignment during functional activities. By the time you finish a ‘course’ in SEAS, we want you to be able to achieve optimal spinal alignment without thinking about it.

Benefits of Scoliosis Treatment

If you have scoliosis you can benefit from the SEAS method. SEAS has found significant success in treating adolescent and adult scoliosis.  In adolescence, SEAS can be used in low to medium curves to reduce the need for bracing and achieve a more stable spine.  For the adolescent that requires bracing, SEAS in conjunction with bracing can reduce the angle of the spinal curvature. In adults, SEAS can be used to stabilize curvature and increase your ability to perform daily activities.

Think of it as learning a new instrument, it rarely sounds good from the beginning, but with dedicated practice, one may acquire the ability to correct, control, and have endurance in maintaining postural corrections over time in relatively still positions. And the reward can be a reduction in spine pain, improved posture and prevention of the scoliotic curve progression.

Treatment Duration

Each patient who comes to our practice is unique and requires a program tailored to their diagnosis. The number of treatments and frequency is dependent upon many factors including age, the severity of scoliosis, and adherence to our recommendations. In the beginning, your therapy sessions are typically 2 times per week for several weeks. At that time, depending upon your goals and progress, the therapist will adjust the frequency of treatment. For most patients, after you have achieved independence, we recommend periodic check-ins for adjustments to your program.
